Be Thankful for Blessings and do not Use Them Incorrectly

Post by Ithar Ghada Faied on Wed Dec 01, 2010 9:37 am

By His Eminence The Great Scholar
Abdul Azeez ibn Baz

All praise if for Allah who is alone and I send salutations of peace and blessings upon the messenger of Allah, his family, and his companions.

Allah has tested his servants with poverty and need similar to occurred in this country in the beginning of the 14th century. Allah the Most High said,

And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sâbirin (the patient ones, etc.). Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: "Truly! To Allâh we belong and truly, to Him we shall return." (Al-Baqarah 2:155,156)

This is just like when tests them with blessings and vast provision, like our condition today, in order to test our faith and gratefulness. The Most High said,

Your wealth and your children are only a trial, whereas Allâh! With Him is a great reward (Paradise). (At-Taghabun 64:15)

The praiseworthy and good ending in all of that if for the pious God-fearing whose actions are in accordance with what Allah has legislated such as patience and contentment in times of poverty, gratitude to Allah for His blessings, and spending money in the correct way in times of wealth such as in food and drink, not being stingy when spending on ones self and family, and spending with no need and wasting money. Allah has prohibited all of this as He the Most High said,

And let not your hand be tied (like a miser) to your neck, nor stretch it forth to its utmost reach (like a spendthrift), so that you become blameworthy and in severe poverty. (Al-Isra 17:29)

And He the Most High said in regards to wasting money,

And give not unto the foolish your property which Allâh has made a means of support for you… (An-Nisa 4:5)

Allah the Mighty and Majestic has prohibited the giving of money to the foolish as they spend it incorrectly and this is proved by the fact that spending incorrectly is prohibited as Allah the Most High said,

O Children of Adam! Take your adornment (by wearing your clean clothes), while praying and going round (the Tawâf of ) the Ka'bah, and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allâh) likes not Al-Musrifûn (those who waste by extravagance). (Al-A'raf 7:31)

As He said,

But spend not wastefully (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift Verily, spendthrifts are brothers of the Shayatîn (devils… (Al-Isra 17:27)

Wastefulness is spending more many than is required by a need and being excessive is spending it incorrectly. Many people have been tested today with pride in regards to their food and drink especially in 'walimas' and wedding parties and they do not suffice with that which is needed only and many of them throw away the leftovers when the people leave. This is from denying the blessing and is a cause for it to be removed. Thus the rational person weighs affairs according to their need and requirement and if something is overdone beyond the need he looks for someone who is in need and if he is unable and excused from doing so he takes it far away for the animals to eat and whoever Allah wills will pass the this test. It is an obligation upon every Muslim to strive in refraining from that which Allah has prohibited and be wise in his spending, seeking the face of Allah and being thankful for His blessings and at the same time being cautious from carelessness and spending incorrectly. Allah says,

"If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allâh), I will give you more (of My Blessings), but if you are thankless (i.e. disbelievers), verily! My Punishment is indeed severe." (Ibrahim 14:7)

And He said,

Therefore remember Me (by praying, glorifying, etc.). I will remember you, and be grateful to Me (for My countless Favours on you) and never be ungrateful to Me. (Al-Baqarah 2:152)

Allah The Glorified has informed us that gratefulness is not only with statement but also with action as He said,

"Work you, O family of Dâwud (David), with thanks!" But few of My slaves are grateful. (Saba' 34:13)

So thanks to Allah the Glorified is in the heart, upon the tongue, and done with action thus whoever thanks Allah in speech and action He will increase him from His virtue and make his ending good and whoever denies the blessings of Allah and does not spend them correctly he will be in great danger and Allah could threaten him with a severe torment.

We ask Allah to rectify the condition of the Muslims and to grant them understanding in the religion, to grant us success in being thankful for His blessings and using them to aid us in His obedience and benefit of His servants for He is capable of such things. I send salutations of peace and blessings upon our prophet Muhammad, his family, and companions.
